The capacity in submarine networks continues to grow with new cable installations and upgrades to existing lines that enable transmission at higher bit rates. These submarine infrastructure investments are driven by telecom network operators, and more recently, by fast growing cloud service providers to connect their global hyperscale datacenters. Submarine transmission requires optical amplification at regular intervals to boost the optical signal along the transmission line.
II-VI offers a portfolio of highly reliable products for submarine applications including pump lasers, gain flattening filter (GFF) devices and monitoring photodetectors. Gain flattening filters (GFF) are used to properly shape the signal’s spectral profile, which increases system margin and achieves longer transmission reach. Monitor diodes provide information about the health of the submarine transmission line.
