The efficient buildout of the global optical transport infrastructure relies on next-generation highly flexible reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) that enable the optimization of bandwidth utilization across the network with dynamic data rate selection and channel width allocation. The key building blocks of ROADM line cards are wavelength selective switch (WSS) modules, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), optical monitoring modules and passive optics.
Wavelength selective switch (WSS) modules enable ROADM systems to switch large data pipes through the optical transport network. II-VI’s WSS optics include cylindrical and spherical lenses, prisms, mirrors, filters, YVO4, polarization beam splitters and gratings.

Arrayed EDFAs are critical to overcome signal losses emerging from optical network architectures that employ colorless, directionless and contentionless (CDC) ROADMs. II-VI offers compact, high-density arrayed-EDFA solutions with reduced power consumption that can be designed into the add/drop ports of optical transmission systems. II-VI’s EDFAs are underpinned by field proven, high-reliability semiconductor laser technology manufactured in-house. These include our 1 watt, 980 nm pump laser modules and our dual-chip, dual-output, pump laser modules that enable designers to replace two laser modules with one.
II-VI’s optical channel monitor (OCM) modules provide visibility into capacity allocation by monitoring the DWDM spectrum at the ingress and egress points of ROADM nodes. Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) modules enable equipment manufacturers to monitor data on fiber plant quality both at system start-up and during operation to improve operational efficiency and uptime of the optical network.
