Power electronics based on silicon carbide (SiC) enable systems to achieve significantly improved power utilization and conversion efficiencies, lower operating temperatures and reduced thermal load. This enhances reliability, shortens battery charging time, reduces overall electricity consumption and increases total system performance. One leading application is in automotive systems where SiC power electronics can be found in Electric Vehicles (EV), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV), specifically in primary motor drive inverters, battery chargers, DC/DC converters and inverters to power other systems in the car.
